Saving Lives and Inspiring Hearts:Pat and Van's Story

As we step into the rhythm of the new year, we are reminded of the profound impact generosity has in transforming lives—often in ways that ripple far beyond what we can measure. Today, we are humbled to share the heartfelt words of Pat Henderson Turner, whose story encapsulates the power of kindness, community, and exceptional care.

Pat chose to support the Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation in honor of the outstanding care her husband, Van-Allen, received during a critical time in November 2023. Her touching account sheds light on how acts of compassion and professionalism can make an enduring difference.

The Couple’s Journey

“Some members of our family no longer exchange Christmas gifts with each other and instead pool our money to donate it, and a different person picks the charity each year. This was my year, and I chose your foundation because several family members have received such excellent care there when they needed medical intervention. But mainly because in November 2023, SJRH saved my husband, Van-Allen Turner's life.

We live in Kingston, Ontario, but were in Saint John for business and to visit family at the time. My husband had diverse health challenges for a couple of years, and unfortunately, when we got to Saint John, he again became acutely ill. His health had resulted in many trips to the hospital, usually by ambulance, and multiple admittances to Kingston General Hospital here in Ontario. The treatment he received in the Emergency Department in Saint John was certainly as good, if not better, than what he got here in Kingston. Staff in Saint John went out of their way to make sure he was quickly triaged, diagnosed, and admitted. Beyond that, they were all very caring, kind, patient, calming, and supportive.

Once admitted, Van continued to receive excellent care. SJRH has every reason to be proud of the professionalism, dedication, and caring attitudes of its personnel.

Van had meant to write a thank-you when we got back to Ontario after his discharge from SJRH, but unfortunately, he continued to have health challenges and died unexpectedly from an unrelated cause in February 2024. This seemed like the perfect time for me to pass on Van's, and my, thanks to SJRH for their wonderful care of him.”

A Legacy of Gratitude

Pat’s story is a poignant reminder of the strength of human connection and the incredible role healthcare providers play in people’s lives. Her decision to honor Van’s memory by giving back to the Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation reflects a deep gratitude for the compassion and excellence she and her family experienced.

At the Foundation, stories like Pat’s inspire us every day. They remind us that generosity transcends distances, bridging communities and uniting people through shared values of care and kindness.
