Advancing innovation & specialized care

For families searching for answers to complex medical conditions, the wait for genetic testing can feel endless. These tests help identify changes in a person’s DNA that may explain inherited conditions, unexplained illnesses, or serious health risks, giving families answers and helping guide treatment decisions.

In New Brunswick, patients have often faced long wait times, out-of-province referrals, and delayed diagnoses. For many families, this means prolonged uncertainty and missed opportunities for early intervention.

Thanks to donor support, a new initiative at the Saint John Regional Hospital is helping change that.

Led by Dr. Doha Itani and supported through The David Elias CHS Health Care Innovation Award as part of the Foundation’s Medical Innovators’ Challenge, the project will improve access to advanced genetic testing here in New Brunswick.

By combining advanced DNA testing with AI-supported analysis, the initiative aims to identify genetic changes more quickly and accurately, improving care across many areas of medicine, including cancer, heart disease, and neurological conditions.

Thanks to donor support, we are bringing these services closer to home, to reduce wait times, improve the patient experience, and lessen the need for out-of-province care.
