A Lifeline of Hope: Joanna’s Triumph Over Leukemia and the Power of Compassionate Care
"The medical staff understood how important it was for me to see my girls. They made it happen whenever it was possible.”
-Joanna Carson Skead, Grateful Patient
When Joanna Carson Skead first began to feel unwell, she could never have imagined the life-changing journey ahead of her.
“I felt like I had the flu. I just felt run down,” Joanna recalls. “Then, I started having some worrisome symptoms like rapid heartbeat and fever. I just knew something was off, but I had no idea how bad it was.”
Her world turned upside down when blood tests revealed a shocking diagnosis: acute lymphoblastic leukemia, a type of blood cancer. Overnight, Joanna went from resting in her bedroom to securing a bed at the Saint John Regional Hospital, where doctors began immediate chemotherapy. Despite several rounds, the leukemia remained uncontrolled, presenting an even greater challenge. Fortunately, her medical team recommended a targeted immunotherapy drug that would change everything.
“It knocked my cancer out of the park,” Joanna shares, expressing profound gratitude for the care she received.

Throughout her four-month hospital stay, one of the most difficult parts was being separated from her family. However, the compassionate hospital staff understood the importance of maintaining those crucial connections. They facilitated visits with her daughters whenever possible.
“The joy of seeing my girls bouncing around my hospital room, playing with toys and games from the Child Life program, is something I’ll never forget,” Joanna says. This program, supported by generous donors, not only helps children cope when they’re ill but also provides vital emotional support when their parents or loved ones are facing health battles.
Behind the Scenes: Heroes in Healthcare
Joanna formed close bonds with many hospital staff members, including Kaitlyn James, a nurse whose compassionate care left a lasting impact. Kaitlyn’s inspiration to enter nursing came from her own aunt’s battle with breast cancer.
“I want to be their advocate, ally, and lifeboat,” Kaitlyn shares. Her commitment to patient care goes beyond medical treatment. Small comforts—like free Wi-Fi or the latest equipment—provided by thoughtful supporters make a huge difference.
“These things may seem small, but they mean a lot to our patients and us,” Kaitlyn emphasizes.
