News & stories, 31 Social Work Students Fueled Their Futures
December 2025
Thanks to caring people like you
The costs of full-time (unpaid) practicum placements add up fast.
Groceries, gas, bills — it’s a lot. But this summer, 31 social work students at UNB Saint John got help managing those costs, thanks to a one-time grant.
The grant was made possible by donors like you!
And for James Derrah, that support meant he could keep going — for himself, and for the people counting on him.
James is a second-year social work student, and the first in his family to attend university.
This summer, he did his practicum at Horizon’s Adult Addiction and Mental Health Clinic in Sussex — a perfect fit for his dream of working in mental health and addictions.
“I used the grant to pay for gas, buy groceries, and support my family as I continue to pursue my degree,” he said. “From the bottom of my heart, thank you. It made a huge difference.”
Your kindness helped 31 students say yes to their practicum — and to their purpose.
“I had very limited support from anyone for my education. The money that you have provided to me through this grant was very much appreciated.” – James Derrah, 2nd Year, UNB Saint John Bachelor of Social Work
