Early Care, Lifelong Impact: Lily's Story of Spinal Surgery and Inspiration
My name is Lily McLaughlin, and I’m a grateful patient of the Saint John Regional Hospital.
When I was 11 years old, I found out my spine was shaped like a backwards S.
I’d been struggling to sit through class. My backpack hurt my back. People kept telling me to fix my posture — but I couldn’t. I didn’t know it then, but I had scoliosis, and it was getting worse.

By Grade 8, my family and I were faced with a big decision. I could wear a back brace for 20 hours a day, or I could have surgery. I was scared — but I knew surgery was the right choice.
We made the drive from Woodstock to the Saint John Regional Hospital, where Dr. Neil Manson performed a delicate spinal surgery to straighten my spine. From the very beginning, I felt safe and cared for.
I was up and walking the next day. Within two months, I was back on the soccer field. That summer, I even climbed Mount Carleton.
Today, I’m 18 years old and studying at university in Fredericton. I’ve run a half marathon — and I’m working toward a future in healthcare. The nurses who cared for me inspired me. I want to be that person for someone else.
My story is proof that early, expert care can change everything.
That’s why I’m proud to share my story during the Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation’s Radiothon. When you give, you’re helping kids like me grow up strong, confident, and ready for whatever comes next.
Thank you for supporting care that truly shapes lives.
